UFC 203: Miocic defeats Overeem with first-round KO

I think he will manage to fight his fight and not let that get to him.

In the early stages of the fight Overeem seemed tentative, but then the Dutchman floored the champion with a straight left and threatented with a guillotine choke. Overeem later claimed Miocic had tapped and the referee missed it, but replays could not verify his claim. Miocic and many others around the UFC knew that the No. 3-ranked contender in the heavyweight division deserved a title shot. But Miocic survived the scare, got up and sent Overeem running, literally, for his life. I’m a boxer, wrestler, but I train that sh*t every day.

Entering tonight’s event, Miocic boasts a 15-2-0 record.

Stipe Miocic just remembers one thing, and that’s knocking out Alistair Overeem. Overeem keeps circling out.

Miocic then began to turn up the offense and chased down Overeem, trapping him against the cage and throwing flurries of punches.

“I’m still the heavyweight champion of the world”.

Miocic landed a right hand and Overeem came back with one of his own. “He’s a great athlete”.

“I’m going to stop Overeem in the first round. He’s tough.” Originally from Amsterdam, Overeem suffered his first loss since September 2014.

The 38-year-old Punk was on his back less than 10 seconds into the fight. During the last period Alistair won four victories in a row over Struve, Nelson dos Santos and Orlovsky.

Don’t be fooled though, the fight was anything but one-sided and was nearly over within seconds.

Earlier on in the evening, the prelim fights saw UFC veteran Nik Lentz win with a second-round KO of Michael McBride, a late stand-in for up and coming Chechen Mairbek Taisumov, who had to pull out because of problems with his visa. Meanwhile, in the co-main event, top-ranked Heavyweight contenders, Fabricio Werdum (No. 1) and Travis Browne (No. 7) will trade leather once again, with the victor likely earning a future 265-pound title shot against the main event victor or an eliminator match against Cain Velasquez.

Stipe is defending his heavyweight title when he takes on Overeem in Cleveland, it will be the first time he has attempted to defend the title since winning it from Fabricio Werdum.
