Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland pulled off a surprise win over World No. 1 Novak Djokovic from Serbia in the finals of the 2016 US Open in Flushing.

A moment of silence was observed at the U.S. Open to mark the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Djokovic sizzled at the start, racing to a 4-1 lead.

There was a bit of minor controversy for Djokovic, who appeared to be suffering from a cramp at the beginning of the fourth set.

Wawrinka, who does his best work with titles on the line, set up his championship point with an easy volley after sending a worn out Djokovic deep into the backhand corner. But don’t forget the forehand, which is among the most punishing around.

“This is honestly awesome”.

“I came here without expecting anything but every time I stepped on court I won”.

‘I played a lot of tennis, I am completely empty. I had to bring everything I had today against Novak. “Been around for so many years, and he plays best in the big matches”, Djokovic said after the final, as quoted by US Open’s official website. Djokovic, on the other hand, took a very unusual route to the ultimate showdown: He played barely nine hours because two of his opponents retired and one gave him a walkover.

Stanislaus Wawrinka was unable to contain his excitement after capturing his maiden US Open title and first grand slam trophy of the year. Now he took a bite out of Djokovic in the Big Apple. “You were the more courageous player in the decisive moment and he deserves his title”. “I think that’s what decided the match”, Djokovic said. “He’s winning five Masters 1000 minimum”, explained Wawrinka. He’s won the last 10 tournament finals he’s contested.

Coming into the match, Djokovic only played three complete matches before entering the final. Or, did he not play enough tennis? Novak Djokovic lost 1-3. Djokovic apologized while receiving treatment.

“This was the most hard slam I ever played”, Wawrinka said.

“I really didn’t know whether or not I’m going to come, to be honest”, he said. His ease with the clay was in full display during his match against Roger Federer, in which he defeated his fellow countryman in straight sets.

It was in January 2014 that Wawrinka beat Djokovic to reach the Australian Open semifinals.

“At this level of professional sport after playing for seven or eight months you aren’t very fresh”.

Djokovic pegged back an early break but Wawrinka continued to exert pressure, setting up two set points with a forehand victor and celebrating as the Serb went wide, smashing his racquet in frustration.

Wawrinka, though, continued to gain strength while Djokovic was physically falling apart. Djokovic was broken from 40-15, donating a pair of double faults in the game.

We will see around Jul. 4, but until then, we have to look back and appreciate Wawrinka for what he is. This time, though, while Wawrinka recovered from an edgy start to begin his typical bullying from the baseline – not only with his best-in-the-game one-handed backhand but off both wings – Djokovic seemed to lose his way.

“You know, in the matches like this, if you don’t use the opportunities, the other guy comes and takes it”. Djokovic blew a game point at 5-6. And despite a 5-19 shortfall against Djokovic, Stan’s won three of their last four in Slams.
