New champions add to fresh look of US Open
Wawrinka, seeded third, won 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 to add the USA title to his 2014 Australia Open title and his French Open triumph past year. He didn’t win a match at the Olympics and, even while doing his Djokovic thing en route to the final, he never felt like the dominant player he had as recently as this year’s French Open, when he finally capped his career Slam. “When I was a kid, I was always dreaming to one day be the No. 1 player in the world, to win Grand Slams”, said the 28-year-old Kerber, who will move up one spot from No. 2 and replace Serena Williams atop the WTA rankings on Monday. “I really didn’t know whether or not I’m going to come, to be honest”, said the 29-year-old Djokovic who ended the Grand Slam season with a sixth Australian Open and a maiden Roland Garros.

Stan Wawrinka has won the US Open final against an uncharacteristically tiring Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic, who was looking for a 13th major crown and a third at Flushing Meadows, looked strong at the outset but failed to take a string of break point opportunities as Wawrinka came to the fore.
Stan Wawrinka is one set from winning the U.S. Open against top-ranked Novak Djokovic. Just put the fight on the court and you will have a chance to win.
At a tournament where trainers had almost as much court time as tired players, Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka were the last two standing in their respective draws as they each captured their first US Open titles.
The Swiss Wawrinka’s statement on court followed that of American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who won the women’s doubles title with Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, and appeared to choke up during her victory speech, telling the crowd: “It’s a special day today here for everybody in NY”.
In 2014, Wawrinka took on then world number one seed Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open, beating him 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3. “If you want to beat the number one player in the world you have to give everything”.
“I played a lot of tennis, I am completely empty”. After three-set victories in the first two rounds, he had to suffer through a five-set win over Daniel Evans in the third round.
At the US Open this year, Wawrinka wasn’t at his best. He is, after all, 3-0 in major finals, and has won 11 consecutive finals overall. Just look the tournament they won, how many years they been there.
Angelique Kerber wearing Adidas gear and playing with a Yonex racket in the U.S. Open women’s final. “It’s big. But I’m way too far to be No. 1”. Ultimately however, the Serb was able to win the last five points of the deciding phase to take the set. At least that’s the way I would have played it. Wawrinka lamely chose to remind everybody he was joking.
Swiss Wawrinka said ” This is wonderful.
‘It was a fantastic couple of weeks for me, ‘ said the Serbian.

Bleeding “Yesterday I don’t know exactly what happened but the second they told me – because normally you have only one – they told me it was because he was bleeding”. However, the journey won’t be smooth as long as Novak sees Wawrinka on the other side of the net in Grand Slam finals. I feel better than him. “Stan won three Grand Slams now and three different ones; (an) Olympic medal”.
