We Are Here for the Eid Al-Adha Edition of #BlackOutEid

Bakrid is also known as the feast of sacrifice because the legend goes that on this day disciple Hazrat Ibrahim who obeyed God’s command and was about to sacrifice his son Ismail. Egypt’s streets turned into one big yarn filled with sheep and cows. The crowd was easily more than 5,000 people, many families dressed in their holiday best, with traditional clothes from just about every part of the Muslim world. “Food and money are distributed to those in need as men, women, and children reflect on their fortune and look towards the next year”. His work force jumps from the usual four to about two dozen during Eid al-Adha, and he has to hire butchers from local supermarkets to help out. All the Muslims on this day sacrifice the goat as an offering to God. I’m not the most religious person.

There is a move among Canadian Muslims to have this, and the feast of Eid al Fitr, which follows the holy month of Ramadan, declared official holidays. I usually fast with my dad, who’s not with me in NY. Instead of holding big outdoor gatherings for morning prayer on the day of Eid, they met indoors and out of sight.
