Cauvery river strike brings Bengaluru to a halt, many stranded at airport
The protests started in Karnataka’s Mandya district on Monday after the Supreme Court ordered the state to release 15,000 cusecs of water from the river Cauvery to Tamil Nadu for the next 10 days.

The bandh has, especially, hit Bengaluru with the state government extending its tacit support to the protestors.
In Karnataka’s Mandya region, farmers took to the streets against the apex court order and blocked roads in protest, threatening to launch a bigger agitation and block feeder canals to stop the supply of water to Tamil Nadu. This has triggered a wave of protests in the state, specifically in Cauvery river belt.
After an all-party meeting on the issue, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters yesterday, that a decision has been taken that the state will release water as directed by the apex court.
The dawn-to-dusk bandh in Karnataka has stalled normal life in Bengaluru as well as other areas of the state.
The union Water Resources Secretary is the Chairman of the Supervisory Committee while the chief secretaries of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry are its members, besides officials from the Central Water Commission. Banks and restaurants were also closed.
Public transport remained off roads in the state, and metro services and airport taxis also did not function. A few of the companies which work for US-based companies had declared leave for their employees on Tuesday as it was a holiday in USA on Monday.
Karnataka Cable Operators Association did not air Tamil channels. Security has been stepped up and additional forces have been deployed across the state.
Around 2,000 protesters who tried to enter the state secretariat in Bangalore were detained.
He has been admitted to a hospital, police said.
Workers of the pro-Kannada outfit held a protest here, bringing traffic to a halt in the heart of the city.
KASSIA VP said “We can not run the industry without water that is why we are supporting this bandh”. Protests and demonstrations were held across state in places like Ballari, Koppala, Chikkaballapura, Dharwad, Kolar, Chitradurga, Hassan among others.
In Ballari, three lorries bearing Tamil Nadu registrations were stoned by protesters. They sought permanent solution to the Cauvery row that has been causing inter-state disharmony since many decades.

“It is inevitable for Karnataka to comply with the Supreme Court order in the interest of the state”, top government sources said, adding, “constitutionally, it is not possible to defy it”.
