Firmino opened scoring for the Reds in the 13th minute when he latched on to James Milner’s flawless pass from the left side and Brazilan forward turned his marker Robert Huth before calmly slotting the ball past Kasper Schmeichel. It was his second goal of the new season.

But just because they are now facing Brugge, Porto and Copenhagen does not mean Claudio Ranieri’s side will deviate from the secrets of their success. It wasn’t only the goal he took with aplomb or the brilliant run that led to Firmino’s second goal but the work he did off the ball.

“We will take the positives away from the game, if there are any, and look at the negatives”. It was OK and we have to clean our mind.

Ranieri attempted to remain positive, however, after another disappointing outing.

“I want to see how we react”.

For Liverpool supporters, the victory was especially important given the sense of occasion regarding the opening of the new stand.

Against Arsenal and in a 2-0 defeat by Burnley in August Liverpool’s defensive deficiencies were exposed and they were caught out before the break when Jamie Vardy capitalised on Lucas Leiva’s mindless ball across goal to tap in from close range.

I didn’t speak about the goal we conceded, I spoke about the reaction we showed after the goal – that made no sense.

“Have a couple of good seasons here, and then the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid are going to come sniffing”.

Mane has scored two goals from his three league appearances so far, including a strike on his Anfield debut in the 4-1 win over Leicester City at the weekend.

“Liverpool played better than us and deserved to win”, he said. Everything they tried to do was okay and they were inspired.
