JJ Watt (back) returns to Texans’ practice Monday

Watt has been on the preseason PUP list since he had surgery on a herniated disc in his back in late July after re-aggravating his back injury.

Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien says that injured star J.J. Watt is feeling much better and that it “looks decent” for him to play in the season opener against Chicago on September 11. Chicago, per league source.

Monday brought further reason to believe that the three-time Defensive Player of the Year will be in his customary spot on the defensive line. The Texans added a new starting quarterback, Brock Osweiler, a new starting running back, Lamar Miller, this offseason, but know Watt is undeniably the leader of this team on both sides of the ball. Watt hasn’t spoken to the media in a month, but when he did talk to reporters at the start of training camp he noted that he doesn’t necessarily need preseason work to play in Week 1. “Where are they at as it relates to their own conditioning, their own ability to stay in there and sustain plays throughout a drive”.

The Texans did the same thing with left tackle Duane Brown who tore his quad in the final regular season game in January and then had surgery.
