Cao wins China’s third table tennis gold at Rio Paralympics

Yao has now won gold medals at four different editions of the Paralympic Games.

China’s Xu Lili won the event’s silver medal, while Taipei’s Lin Tzu-Hui won the bronze medal.

Poles have won three silver medals so far: Bartosz Tyszkowski in the shot put, Robert Jachimowicz in the discus, and Wojciech Makowski in the 100 metres backstroke.

“I won three silvers in London but I will trade all those in for this one gold”.

The last British athlete to win Paralympic medals in two different sports was Isabel Newstead, who collected a pair of bronzes in shooting and javelin at the 1988 games in Seoul. “I just focus on myself because I think this sport is where you compete against yourself, the only one I have to defeat is myself”.

The 37-year-old from Guildford, who made the transition from cycling to rowing after London 2012, won arms-shoulders single sculls to claim gold eight years after cycling time-trial gold in Beijing.

Kazakhstan’s Raushan Koishibayeva took silver with 113kg and Egypt’s Amal Mahmoud bronze with 108kg.

Turnham and Hall finished with bronze at March’s Track World Championships, but finished first this time.

“She never pressured me, just helped me improve and encouraged me”. James Ball and his pilot Craig MacLean were fifth.

Alison Patrick and her guide took silver and Melissa Reid and her guide Nicole Walters bronze as Australia’s Katie Kelly and her guide Michellie Jones won gold at Copacabana beach.

But Steadman, who made her Paralympic debut aged 15 in Beijing, was happy nevertheless after finishing just over a minute behind eventual victor Grace Norman of the United States.

I just wanted to go fast and to pay back my coach.

“When I came across that finish line, I held the tape in the air and wondered whether it was all real”.

World champion Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi won the first gold medal in the 100m T36 (cerebral palsy) event, setting a Paralympic record, while Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli won gold, while setting a new world record, in the men’s shot putt F20 (intellectual disability).

“I am extremely happy and it means a lot to me, even more than the previous two [gold medals]”, Liu said.

It is little more than two years since he completed his first triathlon, but he claimed an impressive win in one hour 11 minutes 49 seconds, winning by 41 seconds from his nearest rival after moving up from fourth place at the end of the bike leg and ahead of the five-kilometre run.
