Chiefs’ season opener shows best, worst of what they can be

It wasn’t pretty, but the Kansas City Chiefs got the victory and start the season 1-0.

There were two major breakdowns in the kicking game.

Allen was having a big day for the Chargers, who led 21-3 at the time of injury. Questions persist about third year LB Dee Ford and how much he can help the Chiefs pass rush.

Reid and the Chiefs have never wavered in their commitment to Smith, but it would make sense if they thought they’d gone as far as they could with him as their quarterback.

It’s the first investigation conducted by the league and players union since the two entities announced a new policy in July to enforce the NFL’s game day concussion protocol and discipline teams that violate it.

At this point, all hope was lost for the Chiefs. Then suddenly, the switch flipped. You won’t stop me!

Carr completed 24 of 38 passes for 319 yards and a touchdown and Brees completed 28 of 42 for 423 and four touchdowns. The Chiefs, at one point trailing 24-3, had trimmed their deficit to 27-17 and energized a crowd that had begun thinning at halftime.

It took Kansas City 10 plays to march 75 yards in overtime, and Smith finished it when he made a decision to keep the ball rather than pitch it when the smallest of creases opened. It was about as animated as you’ll ever see the mild-mannered California native. But Philip Rivers and Co. were unable to keep drives alive, Smith and the Chiefs capitalized on good field position, and the game was soon tied at 27 as regulation came to an end. Cushing also missed significant playing time with a range of injuries in 2012 and 2013, but started every game last season. He had six catches for 63 yards up to that point in the game. Stephen Anderson contributed 25 yards in three catches.

Giants linebacker J.T. Thomas III was also carted off, after spraining a knee on a kickoff return on the final play of the first half. “Luckily, we found it there in the second half and overtime”.

Sunday’s 13 games coincide with the 15th anniversary of the attacks by al Qaeda hijackers that brought down the two largest towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. “You’ve got to give them credit, they had an awesome fourth quarter and we didn’t do anything to counter”. It really does seem like team took a giant step forward today.
