Emily Thornberry attacks Labour hierarchy for trying to “quash” Corbyn’s leadership

However the 67-year-old has strong support from grassroots members and the poll showed that those who have recently joined Labour are more likely to back his leadership.

Smith, 46, is a Welsh MP who has said he will fight to keep Britain in the European Union through a second referendum.

He added: “I think he (Mr Corbyn) has been complacent about misogyny, about anti-Semitism, about homophobic abuse in the Labour Party”.

“I don’t think that’s the best thing to do, especially if you’re the leader of the Labour Party”.

In a question-and-answer session with Pink News streamed over the internet, Mr Smith said the abuse is “appalling and unacceptable”.

This compares to 35% of all eligible Labour voters who felt Corbyn could lead the party to victory at the next election.

“Many people use instant access to Twitter, more or less, like continuing a pub conversation and deeply regret the abuse they have sent people at that time, but unfortunately, it’s there for eternity”, he said.

Jeremy Corbyn has vowed that Labour will fight for a “diverse and united Britain”, as he launched a new consultation on tackling discrimination and promoting racial equality.

“And anybody found guilty of that sort of abuse in the Labour Party should be kicked out”.

He said that his party needs to be positive on immigration regardless of whether it leads to “electoral damage”.

“Instead of welcoming the enthusiasm of our new members, instead of celebrating the strength of our mass membership, they have been behaving as if it is something to be afraid of”.

“We ended up having a vote in Britain largely to satisfy the internal politics of one of our political parties and we now face the prospect of Britain being worse off as a result”.

The Labour leader will promise to set up online meetings where people can have their say on legislation.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Emily Thornberry denounced the party’s national executive committee (NEC), voicing support for Corbyn despite scores of resignations in his shadow cabinet.

He said: “Labour party members will not accept what appears to be a rigged purge of Jeremy Corbyn supporters”.

Scottish Labour has committed itself to opposing a second referendum. “It is less than two years since we had a vote, and there is no justification whatsoever for a divisive re-run”. It is odd that the Tories are criticising Labour on independence for repeating exactly what Ruth Davidson said only a few weeks ago.
