Tesla Autopilot 8.0 update uses radar to prevent accidents

He claimed that with the improved radar system of the technology, Autopilot would be able to see large metal objects across the road and determine if the object does or does not pose a threat. Now, however, the company is looking to use it as the “primary control sensor without requiring the camera to confirm visual image recognition”.

The version 8 of their Autopilot software focuses on the radar of the sensor system and not just cameras. The radar will work no matter what weather or light conditions the vehicle may be in during its roll on the driveway, which can help decrease false auto alarms and alleviate speed, which is actually some of the most common reasons behind vehicle crashes nowadays.

Tesla’s autopilot system will be given an upgrade that should prevent crashes like the one that killed a Tesla S driver last May, the company says.

Previously the radar sensor couldn’t be relied upon for controlling breaking because it would often give false positives.

“Initially, the vehicle fleet will take no action except to note the position of road signs, bridges and other stationary objects, mapping the world according to radar”.

Tesla Motors unveiled updates to its Autopilot feature after the semi-autonomous technology was involved in a fatal crash earlier this year.

In addition to these critical changes, Tesla says there are over 200 other, smaller ones as part of the Version 8.0 update.

Musk promised a stronger and more solid Autopilot than he said could reduce vehicle accidents by more than half its current rate.

Electric carmaker Tesla has announced it was upgrading its Autopilot software to use more advanced radar technology. Tesla CEO wanted to underline the fact that flawless safety is impossible to obtain, but the Tesla’s efforts are made to increase the probability of higher safety. To reactivate the feature, they’ll have to pull over and put the vehicle in park. Musk explained that the problem of radar is when it causes unnecessary alarms.

So Tesla made one notable change, and that is introducing a series of warnings that will require drivers to periodically take back control of the vehicle.

Musk wrote: “When the data shows that false braking events would be rare, the auto will begin mild braking using radar, even if the camera doesn’t notice the object ahead”.
