Pouille beats Nadal 3-2 during 2016 US Open
Up next for Monfils will be a matchup against No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, or No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, whose quarterfinal was scheduled for Tuesday night.

It was not the first time this fortnight Pouille has pulled all the right strings in pressure-packed moments.
Until the issues resurfaced in the third set against Edmund, Djokovic appeared rather rested and ready.
“When I was a kid, of course I was dreaming of winning Slams and being one day No. 1, and now it can happen”, said Kerber. “I going to keep working to try to find”, Nadal was quoted as saying by US Open’s official website.
Nadal fell to Lucas Pouille 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in a fourth-round battle that lasted four hours and seven minutes. “And then 6-3 in the tiebreak, he came back”, Pouille said.
Fifty-two winners from Nadal – whose attacking response saw him come out a victor on 35 of 48 forays to the net – weren’t enough.
More seesaw action was in store, with Pouille going up 6-3 in the tiebreaker but then squandering all three of those match points, the last of them on a forehand that sailed well over the baseline. Playing steadily, and with only a dose of the spectacular, Monfils reached his first major semifinal since 2008 by beating an error-prone Pouille 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
“I couldn’t dream better than this”, he said in an on-court interview after falling flat on his back in celebration after his forehand victor ended the marathon on his fourth match point. After Nadal tied it, he had a chance to take the lead but smashed a high-quality chance right into the net to fall behind again. I just congratulate the opponent that probably he played with better decisions than me the last couple of points. He has also begun working with his own physical trainer who travels with him to tournaments.
You can not go insane thinking about these kind of things.
Meanwhile, Nadal told media wing that “it was a close match and I would like to wish my opponent a best of luck for the upcoming matches”.
“I’m looking forward”, the 22-year-old said, and well he might after prevailing in a scintillating fifth-set tiebreaker over Nadal, a player he’s admired since his youth. “Today, I think I haven’t the chance to do it, but Lucas, hit two good tweeners”. After four hours, he can savour his biggest ever victory – stunning Rafa at Arthur Ashe Stadium, and moving into the last 8.
Pouille, who has now won three successive five-setters to reach the last eight, wasn’t intimidated by the massive Ashe stage, even though he only practiced on it previous year. I think it is never easy to play a quarter-final against a French guy.
“At the end it was full”. I have been saying to the French press that I could serve faster.

Pouille will now face his compatriot Monfils for a spot in the semi-finals, after the latter cruised through against Baghdatis with a 6-3 6-2 6-3 victory.
