Hillary Clinton sparks ire by calling Donald Trump backers ‘basket of deplorables’
“How can someone like (Lauer) not set the record straight on Trump’s bogus claim of being against the war in Iraq?” tweeted Glenn Kessler, fact-checking at The Washington Post.

Speaking to reporters the morning after a NY security forum featuring separate appearances by the two candidates, Clinton also slammed the businessman for praising Russian President Vladimir Putin and saying U.S. generals had been “reduced to rubble” by the policies of U.S. President Barack Obama. “Make Trump president of America, ‘” she said in excerpts released ahead of the full interview.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has taken aim at supporters of Republican rival Donald Trump, saying half of them belong in a “basket of deplorables” as people who are racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, or Islamophobic.
Mr Trump fired back, first calling her comments “insulting” on Twitter and then issuing an angry statement.
That’s an extraordinary amount of cash to have lying around – even if it is divided between the campaign and the national and state parties – and it says as much about Trump’s reluctance to spend money on paid advertising as it does about his improved fundraising.
Clinton has made similar comments in the past.
When Trump called for a ban on Muslims coming into the country, Ryan said it was not “reflective of our principles, not just as a party, but as a country” … and still supported the Republican nominee.
Clinton’s remarks were aired as she and Trump, her Republican rival and a NY native, visited the memorial to the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. And he has lifted them up. I wouldn’t target the money for charters and private schools, but the idea that students from low income families actually need more money for their educations than students with all kinds of financial and educational advantages at home, well, Mr. Trump, I have to say, I couldn’t agree more.
“Specifically, my plan will use $20 billion of existing federal dollars to establish a block grant for the 11 million school age kids living in poverty”, Trump said in his speech.
He said that Trump supporters are “not a basket of anything”, adding, they are “members of every class of this country who know that we can make America great again”.
She described them as “people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change”. Merrill argued that “alt-right” leaders are supporting Trump and “their supporters appear to make up half his crowd when you observe the tone of his events”.

He also talked about his opponent, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, during his Cleveland speech. Obama said that small-town voters “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations”. The new figures bring Trump’s total contribution to his campaign to nearly $60 million so far, the campaign reported.
