The 21-year-old intends to live with his parents near Dayton, Ohio, where he is required to register for life as a sex offender.

His case exploded into the spotlight when a poignant statement from the victim swept through social media and critics decried the sentence as too lenient.

“She’s definitely kissing me back”, said Turner. “I think the message should be instead to men, ‘Don’t rape.’ I think we need to switch the focus”. “Basically, they’re at risk while they’re here”, Smith said.

On-page, the title of the article carries the far more palatable, “Brock Turner Walks Out of Jail After Stanford Sex Assault Sentence”.

Also in response to Turner’s case, the California legislature recently passed a bill that would, according to the Los Angeles Times, require minimum prison sentences for sexual assault cases like Brock Turner’s. Brown hasn’t said whether he will sign.

Until now, anyone convicted of rape using additional physical force must serve time in prison, but Turner benefited from a loophole excluding those who sexually assaulted unconscious or heavily intoxicated victims from mandatory incarceration. She was still in denial of her assault until the issue made news and she read the article about how she was spotted by two Swedish graduate students with an aroused Turner gyrating her naked body from the waist down, with her dress pulled over her shoulders. They chased and tackled him when he tried to flee, holding him on the ground until police arrived.

Others in attendance on Friday included Ben Taylor, a Stanford student who felt compelled to come because he has three sisters, and Stella Xu, a local high school student who skipped school just to attend the rally.

California attorney general Kamala Harris added her voice to the criticism, questioning whether the facts “merit that kind of mitigation”. “That’s why I’m here”. He was swiftly ushered out of the Main Jail in San Jose into a white SUV.

“If we had our way, Brock Turner would be in state prison serving a six-year sentence, not going home”, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeffrey Rosen said. He followed the probation department’s recommendation for a “moderate” jail sentence.

At his request, Persky will no longer hear criminal cases after a transfer to the civil division by the end of September. A campaign to recall him is still in the works.

The provisions apply to inmates serving a misdemeanor sentence or felons, like Turner, sentenced to county jail as part of their probation.

The authorities in OH will take over monitoring the 21-year-old as he serves out three years of supervised probation.

He must complete a sex-offender counseling class for one to three years.

Court records show Turner expressed remorse over the assault and attributed his behavior to a night of drinking. He will have to report to a probation officer for three years and must avoid alcohol and drugs during that time.

Turner’s neighbours will receive postcards from the sheriff’s office to inform them that a sex offender is living nearby, and his name, address and photo will remain publicly available on the state’s online sex offender registry.

Deputies will also check on him periodically and without warning, to make sure he hasn’t moved out. He has now been released after just three months due to good behaviour. AP material published by LongIsland.com, is done so with explicit permission.
