The UN Security Council has backed a push for Syrian peace talks in a rare show of unity after widespread condemnation of regime airstrikes that killed almost 100 people.
It came hours after UN officials expressed shock at a Syrian government air attack on the Damascus suburb of Douma. The four “working groups” he called for will tackle safety and protection of civilians including medical access and the release of detainees; political and constitutional issues; combating terrorism and military and security issues; and reconstruction and development.
The statement comes amid a flurry of diplomatic activity on Syria.
The only sustainable solution to the current crisis in Syria is through an inclusive and Syrian-led political process that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, with a view to full implementation of the Geneva Communiqu of 30 June 2012 and, in this regard, emphasizes the urgency for all parties to work diligently and constructively towards this goal, says a statement read by the Council President for the month of August and Ambassador of Nigeria, Joy Ogwu.
The statement did not specifically address Assad’s future, but Western governments have made it clear that a transition would involve his exit from power.
Russian Federation has recently floated a plan to enlist the Damascus regime in the campaign against Islamic State jihadists but this was rejected by Saudi Arabia, a key member of the US-led coalition fighting IS. “I think that’s a major achievement”, he said.
“At this stage, neither side is willing to make additional concessions that could allow this rapprochement to have concrete effects on the ground”.
Abdurrahman, whose group depends on a network of activists across the country, stated a complete of 4 missiles have been fired available on the market, killing 82 people & wounding greater than 200.
The town is in the rebel bastion of Eastern Ghouta outside the capital Damascus and is the regular target of government air strikes.
De Mistura said in a statement Monday that hitting crowded civilian markets is “unacceptable”.

The source accused de Mistura of “making statements that lack objectivity and facts and rely on what is promoted in circles known for their hostility to Syria”.
