Eid al-Adha celebrated by Muslims at events around Calgary

Around the world, Muslims celebrate the three-day feast by saying prayers at the mosque and by slaughtering cattle, goat, sheep or even camel as sacrifice. The start of Eid al-Adha depends on the new moon sighting of the Islamic lunar calendar, so it shifts slightly from year to year on the Gregorian calendar.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his best wishes to the Muslim and Druze citizens of Israel for the Eid al-Adha festival that began Sunday night.

Traditionally, the festival lasts for four days but public holidays vary from country to country.

The head of the Russian Muftis Council, mufti Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, reminded in his speech to believers about the true meaning of Eid al-Adha. The day is an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries.

“Other Calgarians can remember the sacrifice of prophet Abraham, and Ishmael and Isaac”.

The meat from the sacrificed animal is considered pious and distributed among friends and family. Allah later allowed him to use an animal to replace his son.

When Ibrahim was commanded to sacrifice his son, he prepared to submit to the will of God. Being Muslim it becomes essential to sacrifice an animal in the remembrance of the prophet Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) and bestow charity to the poor people either in form of money, meat or zakat.
