The airline responded to angry customers online, apologizing to customers and saying that “we appreciate their patience as our IT teams work to resolve this issue”.

According to tracking service Flightaware, 157 BA flights were delayed, or 17 per cent of its total flights, and five were cancelled as of midday in London.

Delays were experienced at the check-in, baggage drop, and departure areas.

A spokesperson told the UK’s Press Association that passengers are being checked in at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports, but that the process was “a bit slower than usual”.
