Things We Learned From CM Punk’s UFC Debut Loss

Heavyweight title challenger Alistair Overeem offers advice to welterweight Mickey Gall, heavyweight opponents Travis Browne and Fabricio Werdum exchange words on stage, and the fighters analyze their staredowns afterward. It’s MMA, mixed martial arts, UFC. It was madness. It was nice to see a very proud state finally accomplish championships.

Miocic, whose title in in May set off a run of championships in a city that didn’t celebrate one for 52 years, was in big trouble after Overeem caught him on the jaw with a short left.

Overeem was quickly knocked out and Miocic secured the win and the title defense. “I nearly feel a little sad that I’m going to be taking something away from them”.

Heading into tonight’s title fight with Miocic, Overeem is on a four-fight winning streak with victories over former UFC champions in Andre Arlovski and Junior dos Santos.

“We’ve gone from his first fight being in Houston, Texas, which he had maybe four people there rooting for him”. He won the fight. Aside from oddshark.com, all betting books gave him the favors to beat Overeem just like in his last three fights. “First of all he’s a veteran and he’s fought the best in the world”, Miocic said. But who’s to say where I go from here?

Gall (3-0), who made his second UFC appearance, received a disclosed purse of $30,000 – a $15,000 show and $15,000 win.

Bantamweight contender Jimmie Rivera is listed at -125 against 37-year-old mainstay Urijah Faber, who is a slight underdog at -105. Faber is a charismatic guy and has been a fan favorite for a long time, but at this point in his career he’s acting as the gatekeeper for the rest of the division.

The fight was as one-sided as many expected, with Punk taken to the ground within five seconds before falling victim to Gall’s superior skills as a jiu-jitsu brown belt in a rear-naked chokehold. “He’s obviously not feeling too good right now”.

Following a brutal knockout loss at UFC 203, Alistair Overeem claimed that UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic tapped out when he applied a guillotine choke early in the first round of their matchup on Saturday night. So if you’re a UFC fan, or looking to watch a fight for the first time, we’ve got all the info you need to know.

But moving forward, Miocic prefers to fight away from the area.
