Former ITT Educational employees file lawsuit against school

As Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Peter Balonon-Rosen reports, the move comes days after the U.S. Department of Education banned ITT from enrolling new students with federal financial aid.

She’s concerned about getting all of her educational documents in light of ITT Technical Institute’s closure nationwide.

The education department also has prohibited ITT from awarding its executives any pay raises or bonuses, and it must develop “teach-out” plans that would help current students finish their programs at other colleges if the chain shuts down. But ITT has been under the radar of both federal and state investigators over its recruiting tactics, lending practices and job placement figures.

ITT Technical Institute, a national for-profit vocational school with a campus in Oxnard, is closing.

One student stopped by the Murray campus looking for answers, only to find the doors were locked.

“A program that purported to offer computer technology training, that instead was a program where students were basically placed in big box stores to sell computers, rather than actually learn”, Healey explained. ITT Tech has campuses in Norwood and Wilmington.

Students can apply to have their federal loans discharged, or forgiven, if they can prove that the school used illegal or deceptive tactics in violation of state law to persuade them to borrow money for college. But it’s important to know that transferring credits can impact their eligibility for potential student loan relief.

The federal ruling blocked all federal student loan funding for the school. Effective today, ITT said it cut most of its 8,000 employees. Jasmine Nunez was also a student at the same location.

A big question among students will be about financial aid and if loans will be paid off. Students may be eligible for their loan to be paid off depending on when they attended ITT Tech.
