First, they called Aleppo the “de facto Islamic State capital”, when in fact it is Raqqa, prompting an initial correction.

An earlier version of this article misidentified the de facto capital of the Islamic State.

Aleppo is fought over by numerous militias, including Al Qaeda and Isis, and has been bombed both by the Russians and by the remnant Syrian Air Force.

Syria’s 2011 pro-democracy uprising, which gradually devolved into civil war, has sparked a refugee crisis across the Middle East and Europe as millions fled their homes for safety.

On Thursday during an interview with MSNBC Garry Johnson Libertarian Party presidential candidate when being asked that, “if you were elected, what would you do regarding “Aleppo” condition”? “No!” Johnson said, prompting Barnicle to explain that Aleppo is a city in Syria that epitomizes the country’s refugee crisis and has seen some of the worst horrors of its civil war. Johnson, the former New Mexico governor, who is polling around 10 percent, needs to poll at least 15 percent to get onstage with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump for three debates this fall.

After stumbling on MSNBC, Johnson did offer that “with regard to Syria, I do think it’s a mess”.

Joe Scarborough asked if Johnson thought foreign policy was “so insignificant”, that it’s OK for a presidential candidate to not know “what Aleppo is, where Aleppo is, why Aleppo is so important”?

“I’m incredibly frustrated with myself”, he said. Do I understand its significance?
