The Tom Hanks led film, which dramatises Captain Chesley Sullenberger’s dramatic emergency landing of Flight 1549 in 2009, raked in an impressive $35.5 million on its opening weekend, more than twice the take of its nearest rival.
“When The Bough Breaks” features Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall as a childless couple who engage a surrogate that becomes psychotic and risky.
After a summer full of the adventures of talking animals with “Finding Dory”, “The Secret Life of Pets”, to say nothing of “The Jungle Book”, Lionsgate’s animated “The Wild Life”, depicting the story of Robinson Crusoe with talking animals, scored a disappointing $3.4 million in its opening weekend to round out the top 5 at the box office.
Suspense flick Don’t Breathe, which had topped the box office for two consecutive weeks, slid to third with US$8.3 million in tickets sold.
Aaron Eckhart stars as First Officer Jeffrey Skiles and Laura Linney plays Sullenberger’s spouse Lorraine. This marks the largest September debut for a Warner Bros. film, as well as the largest post-Labor Day opening, according to the studio.
It was enough for the based-on-truth drama to nab a dominant first place finish at the domestic box office this weekend.
“Sully” took in $9.5 million at 3,600 screens in 39 global markets, led by $2.3 million in Australia. The film opened with $15 million in sales, missing the $17.7 million estimate from Hollywood Stock Exchange.
The company’s president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer insisted the film had performed ‘way beyond anyone’s expectations.
Dire reviews did not stop Suicide Squad clinging onto fourth spot in the charts after making $5.7 million. It cost just $9.9 million to make. The film, which carries a $16 million price tag and was shot in 2014 by D.J. Caruso, centers on a hidden room in the attic at a rural home.
