‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Hasn’t Even Shot A Major Character’s Scenes Yet
Some have even suggested that Kanata will become a Yoda-like figure in the new Star Wars outings, acting as a mentor to Rey.

Production has wrapped on Star Wars: Episode VIII, but Lupita Nyong’o hasn’t filmed her scenes, Collider reports. When Collider asked about working with director Rian Johnson, the Academy Award-winning actress said, “Rian!” Thanks to the bonus features on Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ 3D Collector’s Edition, we discovered that many of Nyong’o’s most interesting scenes as Maz Kanata in The Force Awakens had been left on the cutting room floor, but hopefully we’ll get to see a bit more of her in Star Wars: Episode 8.
Of course, the photo was presented without any explanation, so I guess Lupita was not on the set during these days. She was the one who had been keeping Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber safe for many years, until Rey came along.
Although Lupita was certainly meeting up with the “Star Wars 8” cast while they were filming, it could have been for a costume fitting, script reading or any number of other production duties.
Nyong’o played Maz Kanata in The Force Awaken.

Star Wars: Episode VIII stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, John Boyega and Carrie Fisher. And it only makes sense that a CGI motion-capture character like hers would be done during reshoots, and given that production has just finished, I’d say that there is more than plenty of time for them to get the character right, at least visually.
