The uplifting drama follows Phiona Mutesi who becomes becomes passionate about chess despite of her background.

The film, which stars Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo and newcomer Madina Nalwangas, is based on real-life events and chronicles the inspiring story of an underdog from the streets of rural Uganda.

The actress joined her fellow co-star David Oyelowo and director Mira Nair in the excitement of their film.

“As someone of African descent, we don’t see enough of that I believe in cinema, in the press as well, so I’m very proud to see a story like this made by Disney as well”, Oyelowo added.

The rules of chess, when explained to the protagonist, work as a (somewhat unsubtle) metaphor for life, about overcoming obstacles that seem formidable, while Phiona’s maturity s shadowed by her rise through the sport, as she grows both as a young woman, and a chess champion.

“I’m just a person from nowhere and now I’m coming to this”.

“I learned a lot about motherhood”.

“I really think anyone and everyone who’s had a dream or has a talent, will fight harder for that to find their true expression – and for people who can help people who are in that state”, he said.

“It’s nearly like your heart is dislocated and running around and just feeling the fear, inhabiting the fear of a mother letting her chicks out every day to survive”, she said.
