LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman is the latest Silicon Valley mogul to put some of his personal fortune on the line this election season with a promise to donate $5 million to veteran affairs groups if Donald Trump agrees to release his personal tax returns.
Asked why he made a decision to support the Crowdpac campaign started by a veteran that will send money raised to non-profits if Trump releases the returns, Hoffman on Tuesday said that those involved in a democracy should understand candidates running for high-elected office. As of Monday afternoon, the total raised sits at just over $6,000. If he raises $1 million, I’ll contribute $5 million. So, if the Crowdpac campaign meets its goal of $25,000, and if Trump makes public documents that he’s so far vehemently insisted on keeping private, Hoffman would donate $125,000; the more money the campaign raises, the more Hoffman will donate, with a cap at $5 million.
Trump’s taxes have been an ongoing topic for much of the year. “As Trump skirts his obligation to the American people, we must show him that we do value accountability and transparency”.

Dustin Moskovitz, cofounder of Facebook, recently committed $20 million to help beat Trump, slamming his campaign as “one built on fear and hostility”.
In 2012, Donald Trump called President Obama “the least transparent president in the history of this country”.

Hoffman’s effort comes following a similar pledge made by Trump in 2012 – when the NY billionaire pledged US$5 million to charity if President Barack Obama would release “his college records and applications” and his “passport applications and records”. Trump has claimed that he is being audited and therefore can not reveal his returns, a fact that many experts disagree with. “As an experienced entrepreneur and business person, I can say that Hillary is the candidate who best ensures the future of American prosperity”.
