49ers open Chip Kelly era with 28-0 victory over LA Rams

Kevin Harlan, who was calling the radio broadcast of last night’s Monday Night Football game between the 49ers and Rams on Westwood One, delivered one of the most epic calls of a fan running on the field ever.

“I tell him all the time, Blaine this is me and you”, Hyde said.

L.A. football fans waited more than 21 years for a team of their own to cheer for and now must wait at least another week for the first score. “We have some work to do obviously”.

The Rams were held to 185 yards, 10 first downs, and failed to make a single trip into the red zone in a rough opener.

“I let my emotions get the best of me”, Donald said.

Hyde gave San Francisco its first points of the season with an 11-yard run with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter.

“People counted us out before the season even started”, Hyde said. And the Rams still can’t figure out how to get elite college playmaker Tavon Austin into successful situations, as his 12 targets and one carry worked out to just 15 yards. It’s us against the world. “We need to keep doing what we were doing”.

The Rams trailed 14-0 at halftime after the offense sputtered and Gabbert came up with big plays.

“. But, I thought we got a really good push up front running behind Joe (Staley) and Zane (Beadles)”.

Case Keenum passed for just 130 yards on 17 of 35 passing and was intercepted twice.

So the Chip Kelly Era opened 1-0, without anything resembling the offensive fireworks that created his reputation at OR and followed him in his early years with the Eagles … and got him hired by the 49ers, actually.

Week 1 of the 2016 National Football League season came to a close with a massive thud. This win was San Francisco’s first shutout since beating the Jets 34-0 in 2012.

“The credit doesn’t go to me, it goes to our defense and defensive staff”, Kelly said. “It’s something for us to build on”. Rams defensive lineman Robert Quinn and receiver Kenny Britt and Niners linebacker Eli Harold and safety Antoine Bethea all held up their fists in protest.

Rams rookie QB Jared Goff, the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, was inactive. That’s basically how Gabbert played in the opener, avoiding the big mistakes with no turnovers or sacks but making few big plays with only one completion that went for more than 20 yards.

A year ago, a San Francisco 49ers touchdown run against the Rams would have been cause for despair at the Hot Shots Bar & Grill in suburban St. Louis.

BACKWARD PASS: On the opening drive of the second half, Gabbert completed a pass to himself when his throw was deflected by T.J. McDonald and he caught it. RB Todd Gurley is dynamic enough to tear through overstuffed boxes, but he was suffocated (47 yards) by a unit headlined by ILBs NaVorro Bowman and Ray-Ray Armstrong, who combined for 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, three pass breakups and two INTs.

Bad breakup still stings for onetime Rams fans in St. Louis
