Trial starts for man in George Zimmerman road-rage case

Matt Apperson is facing attempted second-degree murder charges for shooting into Zimmerman’s truck previous year during a road rage incident in Lake Mary. The bullet missed Zimmerman but broken glass or tiny metal pieces injured him, causing a hospital visit.

George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer acquitted of murder in the 2012 shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, will testify today in the case of a man accused of shooting at him.

Defense attorney Michael LaFay said during his opening statement that Apperson acted in self-defense, and that Zimmerman was the aggressor. Apperson alleged in September 2014 that Zimmerman threatened him in a road-rage encounter, but did not press charges at the time.

Zimmerman was scheduled to testify further Tuesday afternoon. LaFay also told the court that the two men had argued about Martin in the past, with Zimmerman saying, “You know what, I’m gonna kill you, I’m gonna shoot you just like I did that kid”.
