Tom Jackson, 30, died in hospital on Tuesday, nearly a week after he was stabbed while trying to save fellow Brit Mia Ayliffe-Chung, who died in the Home Hill attack despite his efforts.

His father Les, who had flown out to be by his hospital bedside as he fought on life support, had earlier spoken on Sunday of his enormous pride in his son.
Jackson has been praised by police for trying to protect Ayliffe-Chung during the attack. “Thanks again everyone for the love and support you have given us over the last few days, we will be forever grateful”, he wrote.
Ayliffe, from Wirksworth in Derbyshire, previously said her daughter’s ashes would be scattered around the world so she could continue her travels.
In a Facebook message, Mr Jackson’s younger sister Olivia, 23, urged people not to remember her brother as a victim, saying: ‘To everyone back home and everyone here, there are literally not enough words to thank you for your support.
Frenchman Smail Ayad, 29, has been charged with Ayliffe-Chung’s murder and will be formally charged with Mr Jackson’s murder at his next court appearance on October 28.
Police allege Jackson was set upon by Ayad in the bathroom of Shelley’s Backpackers in Home Hill, north Queensland, where he and another man were tending to the fatally wounded Ayliffe-Chung.
A Queensland Police spokesman said: “We’re very sad to confirm that Thomas Jackson, the British man who was injured in HomeHill last week, died in hospital a short time ago”. “I’m hoping this will be read by a friend of Mia’s”, Ms. Ayliffe has noted in a blog for The Independent.
She added: “Before he went to Australia he wasn’t in a good place and he couldn’t wait to get out there to enjoy himself and so that also he could concentrate on his writing”.
“I have today written to the Australian Bravery Declarations Council to nominate Mr Jackson for a bravery award”.
“I also think that wise little girl was here for a reason”, she says, “and part of my journey will be to find out what that reason was”.
