Now, they’ll add the world’s top player to the Nike ranks once again.
Nike has signed world No. 1 golfer Jason Day to a new deal to wear its shoes, apparel, and hat, ESPN’s Darren Rovell first reported on Tuesday.
While no official word has come out from either Day or Nike Golf, this is the final year of Day’s contract with adidas Golf (shoes and apparel) and TaylorMade (equipment), which is now for sale by adidas. But that has changed as Adidas, amidst continued consumer pressure in the golf business, is selling its golf businesses.
The deal, reportedly for $10 million a year, puts Day in the company’s shoes and apparel going forward.
A Nike spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Day is the model of consistency that Woods nor McIlroy have been. And at the same time, Tiger, who built the golf brand for the company, is seemingly finally on his way back to competitive golf and McIlroy is also getting back to better, more consistent play.
In Day, Nike hopes to find more relevance on Sunday of the majors.

The move became possible when Nike suddenly announced last month that it was leaving the equipment business. While it never achieved significant market share in the equipment business, its golf clothing business is a market leader and profitable.
