Police looking for couple after baby found in safe

The Niagara Regional Police is investigating a matter involving an infant being found locked in a safe at a hotel in Niagara Falls.

According to police, maintenance workers at the Howard Johnson on Victoria Avenue were called in Tuesday afternoon to remove an infant from a room safe.

Police are working with U.S. border services to help locate the family.

The hotel room registered to a person from Brooklyn, New York.

The hotel is about a block from Niagara Falls.

The family was traveling in a grey 2015 Ford passenger van with New Jersey plates, officials said.

“At this point we don’t know if it’s anything more than a preventable accident”, she said.

Kraushar said the age and sex of the child, and any other details about the family are unknown.

He said he believes it was a floor safe. “They were quite distraught and brought the cleaning staff back to the hotel room”, he said.

“The local authorities were contacted and the hotel is cooperating with them fully”.

The hotel’s manager, Kevin Liddle, citing the ongoing police investigation, declined to comment Wednesday morning.
