Clemson’s Renfrow to miss month with hand injury

Clemson sophomore receiver Hunter Renfrow will be sidelined for at least four games after breaking his right hand. The Clemson offense has yet to find the same rhythm it had in 2015 and losing one of Deshaun Watson’s top red zone targets will not make things easier.

“We thought Hunter was going to be fine, but the MRI on Monday showed a little crack below his thumb”, Swinney said, via Clemson’s team website. “He could play with it, but the injury would make it more hard to hold on to the ball when he tried to tuck it away. He will have surgery to fix it”.

Renfrow, the starting slot receiver who has two touchdowns on four receptions and 62 yards in two games, suffered a crack at the base of his thumb during the 30-24 win over Troy on Saturday.

Though an exact return date for Renfrow is not yet known, he is expected back by the Florida State game October 29. Memorably, he caught two in Clemson’s 45-40 national championship game loss to Alabama in January. A former walk-on until he was placed on scholarship in August 2015, Renfrow’s first career touchdown was a pivotal score in Clemson’s 20-17 win at Louisville in week three a year ago. Clemson faces an 0-2 South Carolina State program Saturday, but have a tough stretch ahead as they begin their ACC schedule against Georgia Tech the following Thursday.

A sliding 35-yard touchdown catch did the damage for the wideout, whose season will now have a clear line of demarcation.

Clemson wide receiver Ray Ray McCloud drops the football as he enters the end zone during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Troy on Saturday Sept. 10 2016 in Clemson S.C. The play was not ruled a touchdown. (AP
