Mahabali, realising that he was no ordinary Brahmin, with folded hands bowed before Vamana and asked him to place his last step on his head so that he could keep his promise.

Vamana said that he just wanted as much land as could be covered by his three steps. The post has irked many Malayalees, prompting a deluge of criticism on social media. But it is believed that the King would come from the nether world to visit his people annually.

“Vamana Jayanti is celebrated in several states”, said BJP leader from Kerala Sreedharan Pillai.

However, on Wednesday Amit Shah wished everyone Onam. Onam celebrates the beginning of harvest season and the mood of rejoicing is vibrantly captured in the colourful festivities transcending all barriers.

Other political leaders, including opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, CPI-M veteran and former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan also wished the people on the occasion of Onam that falls tomorrow. He added that the greeting was part of “Hindu Rashtra agenda” based on “Brahmin supremacy”.

Shah posted a message on his Facebook page sending his greetings on “Vaman Jayanti”, where an image can be see of Vaman, the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu, stepping on the head of King Mahabali, the famous mythological king popular in Malayali lore.

However, the BJP chiefs post did not mention Onam. This hashtag is similar to an earlier #PoMoneModi one, which was widely used by the Malayali netizens to criticise and mock Narendra Modi for allegedly comparing Kerala with Somalia during the election campaign in the state in May this year.
