“On behalf of all British Columbians, I wish everyone celebrating Eid al-Adha a happy and healthy festival”.
Organizers said such peaceful gatherings are important not only to bring the Muslim community together, but to help combat recent anti-Islamic sentiments.
Muslims celebrate the story of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham to Jews and Christians), who was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son.Ibrahim did not hesitate at this command, but when he prepared to obey Allah replaced his son with a ram, having issued the request as a test of his faith.
After prayers, many people visited markets around the mosque, buying beef, mutton, desserts and fruit.
During the holiday, which ends Thursday, Muslims slaughter sheep or goats to share with family, friends and the needy. It is the second of two major holidays in Islam.
It’s Eid al-Adha which means festival of sacrifice.
Obama said this year the holiday is also a reminder of the millions of refugees across the planet “who are spending this sacred holiday separated from their families, unsure of their future, but still hoping for a brighter tomorrow”.
