Wawrinka, Djokovic set for US Open decider
Djokovic regained the upper hand, as he so often does, reaching his 21st Grand Slam final and seventh at the U.S. Open with an eventful and, at times, weird 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Monfils on Friday.

Kei Nishikori conceded his five-set battle with Andy Murray took its toll in his US Open semi-final defeat to Stan Wawrinka on Friday.
The pattern continued and sections of the crowd on Arthur Ashe stadium booed Monfils.
After his loss, Monfils hit back at the accusations. “I knew it would be tough”, said Wawrinka. Monfils even repeatedly tried to serve and volley, a style he nearly never employs, and erred often. Djokovic raced to a 5-0 lead.
The present could not be brighter for the lefthanded Kerber, the first woman from Germany to win the US Open – and to get to No. 1 – since her idol and mentor, Steffi Graf. I think I’m gutsy to try that against the world No. 1…
The second edition of the new Laver Cup exhibition event, pitting six men’s tennis players from Europe against six from the rest of the world, will be held in the United States in 2018. “Sometimes you don’t have an answer on this type of question, it just happens”. You stand in the middle of the court.
“He started using his backhand a little bit more down the line and with angles”. And then he comes to the net.
“I have nothing personal [against] him, so I’m very sad to heard that”.
The world number 12 started his service game with four terrible points in a row to give Djokovic three break points.
Djokovic had become the first player to reach a grand slam semifinal benefiting from three retirements and/or walkovers, which he said helped him as he tries to recover from arm, wrist and shoulder injuries. But Nishikori fought back and broke Wawrinka later in the set to put the players back on serve and cut the deficit to 3-2. But at the outset of this final, it was Kerber who was in charge.

Angelique Kerber started playing tennis at age three.
Monfils, 30, was born to a Guadeloupe-born father and a Martinique-born mother.
Ultimately, however, the 29-year-old survived again and he is now firm favourite to clinch his third US Open title this weekend and third out of four majors this calendar year. By the end, he was hitting second serves in the low 80s miles per hour or below.
The U.S. Tennis Association held a news conference during the U.S. Open on Friday to announce its partnership with the team event, which will debut in Prague in September 2017. “Then somehow I had this small opportunity and I get it and then I think the crowd was much better”.
The later the round, the better he seems to play. Moments later, the German trailed 3-1. “Physically, we were taking each other to the limit”. Djokovic has won 19 of 23 previous meetings, but Wawrinka did win their 2015 French Open final for his second Grand Slam title. “I mean, all the dreams came true this year”. Kerber was knocked out of the first round of the French Open by Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. “Yes, I’m competing”, said Monfils, cursing for emphasis.
With the win, Djokovic has now reached seven of the past eight Grand Slam tournament finals, his only absence was at Wimbledon earlier this year when he fell in the third round to American Sam Querrey.
But this was Kerber’s turn to show some mettle, breaking back to 3-all and again to end it. Yes, I’m competing. I made a sign to my coach [to] say, ‘OK, I’m going to Plan B.’ ” – Gael Monfils, who appeared to feign indifference in an attempt to lull Novak Djokovic into mistakes. He entered the match winning 92 percent during the tournament.
