The WestJet flight WS27 left Gatwick Airport on Saturday just before 11am and was in the air for more than two hours before it made a sudden diversion.

It was due to land at its destination at 12:59 in Edmonton.

In an emailed statement, airline spokeswoman Lauren Stewart said Flight WS 27 landed normally at Reykjavik’s Keflavik International airport after the crew detected a potential problem with the Boeing 767.

“We joked that an engine had gone”.

The airline didn’t disclose the nature of the mechanical issue, but said the plane would remain in Iceland for maintenance, and passengers would be put up in hotels.

According to Flightradar 24 the flight is now flying at 11,000 ft.

It was thought to be dumping fuel as it held its position close to the airport in Icelandic capital Reykjavík, the Express reported.

Hayden, who was on his way from the United Kingdom to a wedding in Las Vegas, said they were still waiting for word about flights out of Iceland.

It is not yet clear why the plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

“It is important to remember that the declaration of an emergency does not necessarily mean an actual emergency has occurred”, she said in her email.
