New York Mets Sign Tim Tebow to Minor League Deal

As to why Tebow hadn’t tried his hand at baseball earlier, he said, “Honestly, it’s been something I’ve been thinking about for a little while and came close to pulling the trigger past year, going through a day of training for baseball”.

There’s a catch, though: Tebow won’t be available to participate in the Instructional League every day because of his broadcasting obligations with ESPN.

Tebow won the 2007 Heisman Trophy at Florida and played for the Gators’ 2006 and 2008 national championship teams.

The 29-year-old recently announced his desire to play professional baseball and was given the opportunity to participate in a workout in front of more than 40 Major League Baseball scouts on Tuesday.

The news came as a bit of a surprise, as Tebow wasn’t exactly heralded as a baseball prospect, and his scouting report – while not awful – certainly doesn’t make you think the 29-year-old will be fast-tracked to the bigs.

“Someone is going to sign him, I guarantee you that, because it’s Tim Tebow and [the fans] will be coming to a baseball game with a football jersey on, selling tickets”, Decker said. He’ll begin playing for NY in the instructional league later this month. “But from the outside, I can see how it looks as a publicity stunt”.

Tebow’s agent for baseball, Brodie Van Wagenen told reporters a number of pro teams remained to meet with Tebow following his workout a week ago. “I talked to quite a few of our players and our view is the positives outweighs the negatives”, Phillips said.

Tim Tebow is coming to a ballpark near you, or at least he took a step toward doing so Thursday morning.

“I believe Tim has a big heart and he’s a good person”, said former Broncos and Jets teammate Eric Decker.

Baseball is a game of adjustments – you need to be obsessed with getting better to survive and advance. How long? I reached out to ESPN’s scouting expert Keith Law to ask where he’d place Tebow in the Mets’ prospect rankings. “Only one team – the New York Mets – was willing to let Tebow also do some television work”.

Tebow initially worked for ESPN and the SEC Network as an analyst in 2014, and then he resumed his duties not long after he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in September of previous year.
