But even that informal setting – which will run until October 8 – won’t be devoid of controversy.

Tebow won the 2007 Heisman Trophy at Florida and played on the 2006 and 2008 national championship teams with the Gators.

Tebow’s foray into baseball was just supposed to be a marketing stunt, a well-attended professional workout that got people saying the name “Tim Tebow” a few more times so Skip Bayless might live.

He hasn’t played baseball competitively since high school.

The deal is a minor league contract that will launch Tebow’s baseball career, which could lead to a promotion to the Majors depending on how he does.

“Whether that translates into a major league uniform, as Tim has eloquently pointed out, it’s about the process”, he continued.

While news of Tebow’s signing quickly started making its way around the internet on Thursday, not all of the reactions were optimistic about the contributions that he may be able to offer the team.

According to Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports 1, the Mets allowing Tebow to keep his role with ESPN is the reason he signed with them.

“I would consider success giving everything I have”, Tebow said.

Tebow said that quitting baseball during high school was due to him pursuing football on a full time baseball. He probably won’t ever make it to the majors even if he does give it everything he has, but he’s well within his rights to give it a shot if he wants to.

Last week, the 29-year-old Tebow worked out for almost 50 scouts from 28 Major League Baseball teams, including the Mets, in Los Angeles as he embarked on yet another chapter in his unique athletic story. Other than Robert Redford in “The Natural”, how many actors do you know who can hit a baseball farther than 400 feet? “You thought, if this guy dedicated everything to baseball like he did to football, how good could he be?” another scout told NFL.com back in 2013. Some scouts thought the entire thing was a joke – “If (his swing) was any longer, it would take out the front row”, said one scout, probably unaware of the irony. Again this deal has no bad features, the Mets really lose nothing if Tebow does not work out but could gain a huge return if he does.
