After long delay, Tigers beat Cubs, 10-8

The Detroit Tigers had the day off Monday taking a break during a demanding eight game road trip which wraps up when they begin a two game series tonight against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The Tigers squandered a lengthy lead after a two-hour, 17-minute rain delay but stood their ground in the eighth inning, scoring three runs off right-handed reliever Pedro Strop for the win.

For the seventh consecutive start, Cubs starter Jason Hammel failed to work into the seventh inning.

Chris Coghlan continued Anibal Sanchez’s home run woes in the home half of the first, sending an opposite-field shot out to leftfield. The Cubs are 4-1 in their last 5 during game 2 of a series and 4-1 in Lesters last 5 starts.

J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly in Tuesday’s win against the Cubs.

Detroit has fizzled in the AL wild card race with a 56-61 record while the Cubs are 67-49 after having their 9-game winning streak snapped with Sunday’s loss to the White Sox.
