Ford adds 1.5M vehicles to door latch recall

Thursday’s move expands the recall nationwide in the U.S.to include just over 2 million vehicles. With an earlier recall of almost 830,000 cars, the total of recalled Ford vehicle in North America this year reached almost 2.4 million units.

The recalled vehicles include 2013-15 Ford C-Max cars and Escape sport utility vehicles, 2012-15 Focus cars, 2015 Mustang cars and Lincoln MKC SUVs and 2014-16 Transit Connect vans.

The company has recalled almost 4 million vehicles for door latch issues in six separate recalls since 2014. Dealers will replace the latches, the automaker said. When all of North America is included, the issue affects about 2.38 million vehicles.

The increase Thursday comes at the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which sought a wholesale recall, instead of a partial recall – begun August 4 – of vehicles sold only in selected regions.

The company said about 2 million of the recalled cars are in the United States, while 233,034 of the autos in Canada and 61,363 are in Mexico. At least 3 million vehicles have been recalled because of the problem.

Ford says that if the defective latches break, it could increase the likelihood of injury.

The recall is expected to cost the company about $640 million and will be recorded in its 2016 third quarter results. It’s also possible, though less likely, that a door can close with a broken tab, then open while a vehicle is in motion.

Ford said it is aware of one accident and three injuries that could be related to the issue.
