Sports digest: Earnhardt Jr.’s NASCAR season over
“I’m trying to focus and get well and normal”.

“Amy’s been great. She’s been there every single day pushing me”, Earnhardt said. He described Sunday “going to Target or somewhere and I have symptoms and might stumble across an aisle or need more sidewalk than a normal guy”.
SOCCER: Matt Besler scored just hours after the birth of his daughter, 17-year-old Christian Pulisic added two late strikes and the United States routed St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-0 on Friday to move into prime position to advance to the final round of World Cup qualifying. “We know that the way to recovery is to put your best foot forward, to have positive thoughts and to have fast race cars”. Earnhardt has missed the past six races, including this past Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. He wants to be back in a race auto like no other. Collins treated Earnhardt in 2012 after his concussion during a test session at Kansas Speedway.
Earnhardt acknowledged the difficulty seeing others in his seat or going to debriefing meetings at the race shop. Dale has always maintained that he is working toward getting back in the race auto and that he intends to honor his contract with Hendrick Motorsports, which runs through the 2017 season. The hit gave Earnhardt, 41, a concussion, his third in the past five seasons.
“My goal was to have Dale be a human being again and it is occurring in front of our eyes”.
“The second goal is Dale becoming a race auto driver again, and I’m very confident that we’re moving in the right direction in that respect”. Nor will Earnhardt race in any of the remaining 11 races this season. Earnhardt Jr. says his concussion-like symptoms haven’t changed and his return to NASCAR doesn’t appear imminent.
“We’ve kind of been racing for him these last couple weeks … a month or so”, said Sadler, who leads the XFINITY standings by 47 points over second-place Daniel Suarez.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he feels better as he continues to rehabilitate the vision and balance issues he suffers from, but he does not belong in a race auto as he recovers from a concussion suffered in June.
Team owner Rick Hendrick sympathizes with his friend and driver but understands that his long-term health remains the top priority.
Jeff Gordon is also being used as a replacement driver for Earnhardt the rest of the season, but Gossage jokingly guessed why the future Hall of Famer opted not to run at Texas.
“The flip side is I’m happy and proud of him to take a step back and get everything in line from the medical side”, Sadler said. Jerry Petty. Fiancee Amy Reiman, Earnhardt added, deserves credit for inspiring his rehab exercises by doing them with him – an asset he didn’t have four years ago.
“As an organization, our cars are better right now than they’ve been all year long”, McMurray said. I’m as good as I’ve ever been inside the vehicle. My ability to communicate and drive the vehicle and get everything out of it, I feel very confident in.
“You know your body and you know your mind, and you know when something is not quite right”, Earnhardt said at the time.

“Rick likes to say we have some unfinished business”. I certainly feel the same way.
