U.S. bombers in show of force over S Korea
Days after North Korea conducted its most powerful nuclear test yet, two USA bombers flew over South Korea in a display of force – a warning to Pyongyang and reassurance to Seoul.

Such flyovers are common during higher-than-normal animosity on the Korean Peninsula, which is technically in a state of war because there has never been a peace treaty to end the 1950-53 Korean War. Washington also stations more than 28,000 troops in the South, and tens of thousands more in Japan.
A rally celebrating the success of a recent nuclear test is held in Kim Il Sung square in this undated photo released by North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency in Pyongyang September 13, 2016.
Washington and Seoul insisted on sanctions as the only option until Pyongyang agreed to return to the negotiating table with a commitment to abandoning nuclear weapons.
The North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act, which was signed into law in February, would impose sanctions on individuals that contribute to North Korea’s nuclear program, proliferation activities, cyberattacks and human rights abuses.
“North Korea once again has demonstrated blatant and reckless disregard for its commitments and global obligations”, Kim said during a two-day visit to Seoul.
The UN Security council is scrambling to come up with new penalties, but five sets of UN sanctions since North Korea first tested a nuclear device in 2006 have failed to deter it. According to its representatives, the deployment of the USA complexes would lead to tensions with Beijing and Moscow.
CNN’s Will Ripley was in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang then.
China, North Korea’s major diplomatic ally supported the sanctions taken six months ago against the regime in Pyongyang, but now China along with Russian Federation are against the USA plan to deploy an advanced anti-missile system in South Korea created to counter the nuclear threat.
During the rally, a senior government official hailed the reclusive country’s successful nuclear test.
The Air Force has previously deployed strategic bombers to South Korea in response to North Korea provocations, and the deployment is taking place after North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test on Friday. Following the handoff, the B-1Bs and ROKAF F-15 fighter aircraft and U.S. F-16 fighter aircraft conducted a low-level flight in the vicinity of Osan.
China is North Korea’s most important diplomatic and trade partner and refuses to cut the country off completely, fearing it could collapse.
“But the bombers are no longer loaded with nuclear-capable cruise missile such as AGM-129, as the system went out of commission quite a time ago”.
North Korea countered Wednesday that it was the United States that was inflaming tensions.
Six party talks between the US, Russia, South Korea, China and North Korea on ending the North’s nuclear programme have been stalled since 2008.
