Turkey fires artillery rounds into Syria

The Israeli Air Force struck cannons belonging to the Syrian regime late Tuesday evening in response to a number of mortar rounds that fell into Golan Heights just hours earlier, according to a military statement.

Israeli journalist and Time of Israel Middle East analyst Avi Issacharoff quoted unnamed Israeli army sources as having denied the Syrian government’s claims. The Syrian government routinely describes its opponents-armed and otherwise-as terrorists.

Israel has largely remained on the sidelines of the fighting, but has carried out reprisals on Syrian positions when errant fire has previously landed in Israel.

The Israeli strike inside Syria came just hours after the USA and Russian Federation brokered a nationwide cease-fire in Syria in the second attempt by the two world powers to halt the ongoing conflict.

“At no point was the safety of the IDF compromised”, the Israeli military said on Tuesday, referring to the Israeli Defence Force.

The Israeli air force responded by conducting missions overnight to target Syrian regime artillery positions.

Later on Tuesday, the Israeli military said three other “projectiles” fired from Syria hit the Golan Heights in two separate strikes, causing no injuries. It would not elaborate further.

Lerner also noted that no casualties occurred as a result of projectiles being launched into the Golan Heights, where illegal Israeli settlements have been constructed since the territory was captured in the 1967 war between Israel and several neighboring states.
