Israeli Air Force Targets Syrian Mortars in Golan Heights as Fighting Escalates

Syrian state media has said the army has shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone after an Israeli attack on Syrian military position in Quneitra, near the Israeli border.

The Israeli Air Force struck cannons belonging to the Syrian regime late Tuesday evening in response to a number of mortar rounds that fell into Golan Heights just hours earlier, according to a military statement. The Ministry explained that the recent Israeli attack against the Syrian territory was a desperate attempt, trying to raise the spirit of terrorists after their huge losses and defeats experienced by these groups in the field of Quneitra and other areas in this country.

In the meantime, the Israeli military has quickly denied the Syrian claim.

The Israeli army said none of its aircraft had been downed overnight on Monday, as claimed by Syria, and it carried out fresh strikes against Syrian artillery positions on Tuesday night.

“Overnight, two surface-to-air missiles were launched from Syria after the mission to target Syrian artillery positions”.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War and the two countries have technically been in a state of war for decades.

Both raids were in response to what appeared to be stray fire from fighting in Syria landing on the Israeli-held zone of the Golan Heights. “At no point was the safety of [Israeli] aircraft compromised”, the IDF spokesman said.

It has also been accused of targeting arms shipments said to be heading to Hezbollah, an active ally of the regime in the civil war and a long-time Israeli foe.
