US responds to North Korea nuclear test with bomber flyover

Legislative leaders reacted on Friday to news that North Korea had conducted its fifth nuclear weapons test and second such test this year.

In his statement, U.S. Forces Korea’s Brooks called the North’s nuclear test a “dangerous escalation” that “poses an unacceptable threat”. But the presence of the THAAD system has drawn criticism, particularly from China, which tends to view any increase in US military presence in Asia as an attempt to contain it and reduce its influence in the region. Officials there argue that the system’s radar can detect Chinese missiles on the mainland, undermining its nuclear deterrent.

“China has been very clear that they understand the need for a new U.N. Security Council resolution in response to the latest North Korean nuclear test”, Kim said.

Washington and Seoul insisted on sanctions as the only option until Pyongyang agreed to return to the negotiating table with a commitment to abandoning nuclear weapons.
