Two races to watch in today’s primary elections

Some primary races in the Hudson Valley will decide the November ballot for some NY state Assembly and Senate races.

In Lower Manhattan, six Democrats are vying for the party’s nomination to run for the Assembly seat formerly held by speaker Sheldon Silver, convicted on corruption charges late previous year.

The candidates are Alice Cancel, who won a special election to fill the seat in April; Paul Newell; Don Lee, Gigi K. Li, Jenifer Rajkumar, and Yuh-Line Niou.

Other primaries in the region include several Republicans running for the nomination for the seat now held by 54th district State Senator Michael Nozzolio, who is not running for re-election.

Among the hotly contested local races is the Democratic primary in the 138th district between incumbent Harry Bronson and challenger Rachel Barnhart.

Marisol Alcantara, an activist with the New York State Nurses Association, is Espaillat’s choice for the seat and has the backing of the Independent Democrat Conference, which has aligned with senate Republicans.

“Obviously a presidential cycle will get a lot more attention than a race for local DA or state Senate or state Assembly but none the less we do hope that people excerise their franchise tomorrow”.
