Trai orders Airtel, Vodafone, Jio to submit call traffic details

Such hurdles result in poor experience for RJIL customers who are trying to make calls to incumbent operators’ networks.

RJIL explains that these concerns unsubstantiated, as it is natural that there is assymetry in call volume when a new operator enters the market.

Separately, Reliance Jio, which commercially launched its services on September 5, has accused the incumbent players of not releasing sufficient inter-connection ports which is leading to call drops.

Reliance Jio has started receiving positive response from rival telecom network operators such as Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular for interconnection to ensure better quality of services (QoS) to its mobile data users.

Since last week, the incumbent operators involving Bharti Airtel, Vodafon and Idea Cellular were against Jio and were not ready to give any point of interconnection to the company. However, no action was taken for the last several weeks, resulting in non-compliance of TRAI regulation on quality of service which mandates that POI congestion should not affect more than 1 call in every 200 calls made.

“The situation has deteriorated significantly in the last few weeks, with over 75 calls failing out of every 100 call attempts”.

“Even though Jio is offering voice services for free and data at a fraction of the price offered by competitors, these services are only available to subscribers with 4G devices or those using a 4G interface device with their existing smartphones”, said Moody’s.

“Trai has asked telecom operators to submit traffic details for objective of examining them under interconnection usage paper”.

Jio is now acquiring about five lakh subscribers a day and has a subscriber base of more than five million. As the new consumers have new phone numbers, there are bound to be more outgoing calls than incoming calls in the beginning.

RJIL countered incumbent operators claim correlating PoI number with “asymmetry of traffic”. “And if not controlled or eased down, this induced traffic asymmetry may inflame the loss for Idea in the coming months”. The equipment required for POI are two-way trunks, which means that the same equipment is used for both directions.

Airtel made a statement to the media that it is providing additional POI to Jio.
