The police post was also guarding the shrine of Sultan-ul Arifin Makhdoom, the officer said.

According to the spokesman, militants later snatched away a service rifle from the wounded policeman following the attack and fled from the spot.

After the series of killings of civilians and the attacks on the mobile towers for which Lashkar- e -Islam had claimed responsibility, this is the first attack in Sopore town.

The attack occurred at Tujar Sharif in volatile Sopore town, about 52 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

On August 6, a group of heavily armed terrorists attacked on Chanj police post in Udhampur, leaving two Special Police Officers injured.
