Kerber has made her first three Grand Slam finals all in 2016, and she already has a win at the Australian Open.

Karolina Pliskova gave a big shock to world number player Serena Williams. “Steffi’s a great player and a great person, and I think she is proud of me, to be the next one after her”, Kerber said, as quoted by the BBC.

Pliskova, who has been riding her own string of success in Flushing Meadows, cruised to a win in the first set, but Williams battled back down the stretch and rallied to 3-all in the tiebreak.

‘I have been having some serious left knee problems.Mentally [it affects you], because when you’re hampered you’re thinking of other things.

“I definitely was not beat up after my quarterfinal match”. “So many simple, simple shots that I easily could have made”, she said.

Kerber had downplayed talk about becoming number one but admitted it felt “just great”.

“Obviously, she’s had a great year”, Wozniacki said.

And in a double blow, when the new rankings are released Monday, the 34-year-old will lose top spot to Angelique Kerber, ending Williams’ record-tying with Graf 186th straight week at No. 1. “I had to fight hard to win”, she added. So it’s something really special for me, because I was dreaming for this No 1′.

“After that (loss at Cincinnati Masters), I was just telling myself, ‘OK, I will get one more chance”.

World class player Serena Williams faced big heat in US Open semifinals. “I don’t remember her moving so slow ever”.

Wozniacki abandoned the defensive tactics that had taken her to the final four to play aggressive tennis that simply left her out of position and caused her to make too many errors throughout the match.

If Kerber has any letdown Saturday, the rifle-serving, 6-foot-1, tattooed Pliskova will be there to take the Open.

“Everyone was still saying to me, “you can win a grand slam” and I was like, “yeah, maybe”.

“I was watching the match a little bit before I came here but I was trying to focus on this match, not the match before”, Kerber said. Having never advanced to the second week of a major prior, Pliskova now becomes just the fourth woman to have beaten both Venus and Serena at the same major, and first to do so since Kim Clijsters at the 2009 U.S. Open.
