Orioles top Red Sox, pull into tie for 2nd in East

The Rangers now hold a 10.5-game lead over the Astros in the AL West, and a 9.5-game lead over the Mariners. The Red Sox had won seven of ten before the Orioles brought them back to earth for a day with Tuesday’s decision. “We talked about the season a little bit and I kind of fanboy thanked him for all he’s done for the Red Sox over the years”.

After sub-.500 campaigns in 2014 and 2015, the Red Sox in 2016 find themselves in the thick of a playoff race, holding a two-game lead in the competitive American League East entering Wednesday with 18 games remaining, all against division opponents.

The Portland man who caught David Ortiz’s 536th career home run – a shot that tied the Red Sox legend with Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle for 17th on the career home run list – says he happily gave it back to Big Papi in exchange for an in-person meeting during Monday night’s game. The Orioles also took a two-game lead over the Detroit Tigers for the second AL wild-card spot.

“Just as we get to the top of the ramp we hear the crack of the bat”, Jordan said Tuesday night. Zach Britton earned his 42nd consecutive save getting the last four outs for the Orioles.

Xander Bogaerts homered for Boston, which had won five of six.

The Red Sox, who stranded Dustin Pedroia at third base in the first inning, began to chip away in the second.

Dylan Bundy teetered in the second inning when he walked three batters, including two straight with the bases loaded, giving Boston two runs.

The Red Sox scored five runs in the first inning and scored in every frame but the eighth in backing Price. “I think we’re 7-7 with these guys, and we know how good they are, so we get a chance to win another series on the road, which is something we knew we were going to have to do”, Showalter said.

Drew Pomeranz (10-12) gave up five runs and four hits in two-plus innings, his shortest outing of the season. He has pitched erratically since a July trade from the Padres and has a 4.60 ERA in 11 starts with Boston.

Pomeranz was pulled with nobody out in the third after Manny Machado’s leadoff single to left.

Pomeranz looked just fine at first, retiring the first three Orioles.

Manager John Farrell credited Boston relievers for keeping the Red Sox in the game despite the offensive struggles. The Orioles weren’t done yet with Pomeranz, who walked Drew Stubbs after Hardy’s home run and Reimold followed with a line drive home run to left. “… I got ready probably about the seventh inning, just in case I was needed”.

– The offense couldn’t get a clutch hit and the most frustrating inning was the second when they had the bases loaded with one out and after two walks Bogaerts struck out and David Ortiz grounded out to end the threat.

WASHINGTON – T.J. Rivera hit his first major league home run, connecting for the Mets in the 10th off Washington closer Mark Melancon. The Orioles with the loss drop three games back, and the Yankees are now five off the pace after losing to the L.A. Dodgers 8-2 in the Bronx. The Red Sox and Orioles meet again next week for four games in Baltimore.

Reimold, making his first start since September 3, added a two-run shot – his sixth of 2016 – two batters later, clanging a 3-2 Pomeranz pitch off the light tower on the Monster.
