Teen Suspect Charged in the Shooting Death of Rapper Kid Cali

A 19-year-old Inglewood man has been arrested in the death of rapper Kid Cali, who was shot at a Granada Hills house party last month. The arrest took place on Saturday (Sept. 10), according to inmate records.

Justin Lishey, 30, known by his stage name Kid Cali or Cali Oso, was killed at a pool party August 20 in the 12400 block of Longacre Avenue. According to police’s investigation, the incident was gang-related. The two other victims received treatment for their gunshot wounds.

“We just heard gunshots, everybody instantly just ducked and everybody started running”, Dorthea DeVilla, a witness, recalled. Investigators said the killing was gang-motivated but they did not provide additional details.

Cali, who once had a recording contract with an National Football League player’s label, was fatally shot August 20. Cali previously recorded tracks with Kid Red, Nipsey Hussle, Omarion among many others, and upon hearing the news of his death, singers and rappers from the R&B and hip-hop community went on Twitter to send their condolences. It is not known whether Kid Cali was targeted in this shooting or if he was an innocent bystander. Snoop Dogg also tweeted, “Rest well young g”. Today the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Birdine with suspicion of first-degree murder, he said.

Jail records show Birdine was charged in the past with two misdemeanors.
