USC freshman QB Ricky Town decides to transfer

Alabama could be a potential destination for Town, as he was originally committed there, but with true freshman Blake Barnett in Tuscaloosa, the Tide already have one prized quarterback recruit from 2015 and the No. 9 dual-threat QB in the nation committed for 2016.

John Mazur was the starting quarterback at USC as a sophomore in 1981 when Marcus Allen was a Heisman Trophy winning tailback for the Trojans, but he lost a competition for his position during the following spring and elected to transfer to Texas A&M. However, his transfer could have an effect on USC’s depth and recruiting in the near future, and he will likely impact another big-time program wherever he lands. In January of 2014, Town pulled his verbal commitment from Alabama and gave it to USC.

Town would have had an opportunity to compete to be Browne’s backup with fellow true freshman Sam Darnold, but with Darnold one of the fastest rising recruits in the 2015 class and faring well in fall camp, Town’s chances of playing time dwindled. This will be Kessler’s last season with the team and once he moves on to the next level, the Trojans will look towards Browne to take over under center. He struggled during spring practice, which is not surprising for an early enrollee. Previously, redshirt freshman Jalen Greene was listed as the third quarterback on the roster but he recently made the switch to wide receiver and has strived at his new position. That being said, Darnold has been impressive in stretches and just needs a bit more time to be comfortable with the system. As of now, the Trojans do not have a quarterback commit among the 15 players pledged to the program as part of its 2016 class. Martell is expected to announce his decision on Thursday and many believe that the Trojans could be in the lead.

But Adam Guerra, who was Town’s head coach during his senior year at Saint Bonaventure in California, believes Nussmeier and Town’s relationship may not be as strong as others believe. He will be one of the most coveted transfer players in the country.
